Start with the application
Identify the driven machine and describe how it loads the shaft. Smooth pumps, high-inertia rotors, reciprocating equipment and jam-prone augers need different service factors and protection strategies. Record normal operation, start-up, turning, lifting, blockage and coast-down.
Define speed and torque
State 540 or 1000 rpm and the available power. Convert power to torque only with the correct speed and unit system, then apply a duty factor based on the actual load. Do not select from tractor horsepower alone because the implement may use only part of the available power or may create much larger transient torque.
Measure the working envelope
Measure cross-to-cross or locking-point distance at the shortest and longest positions. Include three-point lift, drawbar turns, transport position and any articulated hitch. The final shaft needs enough compression clearance and enough telescoping overlap. Check guard cones and clutch housings at the same time.
Check angle and phasing
Conventional U-joint shafts should be correctly phased and arranged with compatible joint angles. Unequal angles create cyclic speed variation. Wide-angle CV shafts are used for powered turns, but maximum articulation is normally a brief condition and not a substitute for checking normal running geometry.
Select the interfaces
Record spline diameter, spline count, groove, locking method, pilot, flange PCD, bore and keyway as applicable. A model name or photograph is not enough. Where an existing shaft is available, measure the cross kit and tube profile and photograph the locking features.
Choose overload and inertia protection
Describe the hazard before choosing a device. Use overrunning protection for coast-down back-driving, a shear bolt for sacrificial release, a ratchet limiter for automatic re-engagement after intermittent overload, a friction clutch for controlled slip, and a resilient joint for torsional dynamics. Confirm direction, setting and maintenance.
Commission and maintain
Lubricate before start-up, move the hitch through its full range with the PTO stopped, verify positive locking and guard clearance, then test at low load where the machine procedure permits. Inspect regularly for play, heat, noise, cracks, dents, damaged guards, missing weights, loose bolts and spline wear.
